They used it's light to show them the way to Valinor, and there he pleaded for the Valar to come to the aid of Middle-earth. But Earendil and Elwing both were peredhel - and they could not return the way they came. So the Valar hallowed his ship, and set the Silmaril on it's prow. He pilots it now - he cannot return to the lands of his birth, but at least this way he can see it. He's come close only once, in the war the Valar came to fight. He killed Ancalagon the Black, that day. But mostly he's just a star.
