[it was just cliff's luck that the person(s??) trying to kill him would do so competently.
asking him to stay calm under the circumstances was maybe a bit much to ask but he shifts back into his human form, presses his palms flat againt the lid and closes his eyes as he counts his breaths.
his breathing is still a little tight, still going a bit faster than it really should be, but if he focuses hard enough he thinks he can almost feel the shift of the earth above him through the spread of his hands against the wood.
and then part of what the man just said to him catches his attention and cliff has to ask:] ... why quietly?
[why would digging need to be done quietly, what other new fresh horror is waiting for him outside of this hole?]
