Even so, you are more perceptive than most.

[ That kind of talent deserves acknowledgement, Chekov thinks, whether it's in the form of thanks or praise. Besides, to Chekov, Cole did something a little frightening and very otherworldly. That doesn't count for nothing, not at all. Chekov is a little wary of it, but mostly, he's curious, and curiosity is one of Chekov's favorite feelings in the world. ]

And if that is what you call nothing, then your something must be incredible.

[ That's only logic, right? Chekov isn't expecting that sour expression, though, and his curiosity turns back into puzzlement. Chekov could understand if Cole was bitter about not getting the chance to learn, but it seems like the books are angering him more than the act of reading itself. ]

You could learn about so many things. The stars, or the past, or the way the world works, how groups of leaves and groups of the children of animals mirror each other in ways you'd never think of. Sometimes you can't trust the stories, but you can take in the information and decide for yourself. There's a whole other world in writing -- that is not a lie. [ Chekov is a little sad that Cole doesn't get to see it, and what's more, that he doesn't seem to have any interest in learning about it. ]
