- I saved a Tusken Raider once.

- I wasn't a slave as a kid.

Mm. You have mentioned a hot home, so I cannot imagine you enjoying sand too much. Having been a slave would make sense, for I know you wish to defend others in whatever manner you believe best.

But what is a Tusken Raider?

You're right. I hate sand very much and I was a slave. [See his clever wording? I wasn't a slave as a kid. There's the lie.]

Tusken Raiders are a race on Tatooine. Wild and brutal. I found one crushed under a rock and nursed him back to health.

{Maedhros blinks, then chuckles and tugs Anakin in for a hug.}

All I did was give him water and some food. I kept the wildlife off of him for a night and splinted his leg. By the time I woke up the next morning, he had left.

I am called the Hero With No Fear. [So if he has fear, who the heck is he? Darth Vader.] So that leaves two.

I will admit I thought the title was hyperbole before I met you, sir.

[As Anakin, she means. Words like hero are not the sort you applied to Darth Vader.

Your engineering prowess is no secret. But the other....

Do you mean it literally, that you have no father? Or that you never met him?

You are ruining it, soldier. [His lips twitch, amused. Yeah, he knows it doesn't apply to him. He has so many fears they feel like they are choking him.]

Literally. I guess you could say the Force is my father - or the midichlorians, rather.

It's often said that the Force has a will of its own. I suppose it makes sense.

[She pauses.]

Did you know your mother? It's said that you entered the Jedi order when you were older, but nothing was written about her.

It does. When it seeks a grave imbalance, it has a way of...rectifying it. [Sometimes with random babies.]

Yes. [His amusement is snuffed out like a candle flame.] Her name was Shmi Skywalker. She was...wonderful and my world until the Jedi took me.

History has shown us as much. [She hesitates again.] I know it is not my place. But -- how does the Force determine where the balance should lie? How does it judge what is right or wrong?

I am sorry. I am sure -- she was a strong woman.

I'm not sure the Force knows right or wrong. There needs to be Dark and Light or nothing exists. The Force desires for there to be a balance between the two, but it doesn't always work out that way.

[She doesn't understand. But perhaps that's simply the way of things.]

[A lot of factors go into it and he's horrible at explaining...anything. His life and his decisions in particular. A lot of what he does is based on fear and instinct.]

I couldn't save her. [Maketh's belief - whether feigned or real - does mean something to him.] No one will die like she did. I'll find justice...and keep the peace.

I hope not, sir. [Whether things truly can be changed is unclear. But there is no harm in acting as though they could be. She's been afraid of Skywalker before, knows very well what he's capable of. Best to keep him pointed in a specific direction, with a task just monumental enough to keep his attention.

And if he does succeed?

The Emperor is selfish and he doesn't care about...individuals. I know what it's like to be a slave, to be looked down upon and -

I can make it better. And with Padmé at my side, you'll have the best of everything. She's so good at politics and diplomacy.

[While he can handle the military aspects and the harsher punishments for those that disturb the peace.]
