Test Drive Meme #40
Welcome to Hadriel's test drive, and thank you again for your interest in the game! As always, our reserves page is here, and our applications page is here! Reserves open January 24th, and apps are open February 1st. Please remember that there is an app cap of 20 apps.
Two quick points here as well:1. Any thread made in Hadriel's test drive will be accepted as the sole Action Log sample in the application.
2. All threads made in the test drive can be considered game canon, either through handwaving or through a shared mental experience while coming through the Door!
Test drives will be broken up into specific god mini-events, during which your characters can see how well they fare under the watchful eye of one of the gods. Choose wisely or just simply pick 'em all, and have fun!

F E A R
SCENARIO ONE: SLURP SLURP
[The Door brings in all that is chaotic and evil in the world. This may include you, may include the person next to you... and may include the monster behind you.
What's that on the ceiling? Who's that skittering along the wall? Why, it's none other than the the Licker, from the Resident Evil series.
The licker crawls around on walls and ceilings and can easily avoid all attacks with their creepy crawly acrobatics. Watch out for those tongues, though- they can whip you with them and catch you off balance. They love waiting in dark corners to jump at you and slash you with their oversized claws, as seen here. Luckily, their brains are exposed and they're quite blind- move quietly and avoid their notice, or attack them in their weak spot to get away safely. Be careful though, they tend to travel in packs...]

SCENARIO TWO: CABIN IN THE WOODS
[It's nice outside. There's a heat to the air that permeates through the muggy interior of the cabin, but at night, it's cool enough that you can relax and see all the stars in the sky. The hot tub is a nice contrast to the chilly night air and the possibilities are practically limitless!
So cook something up on the grill, go hunting, or just relax and definitely don't get murdered, because you do happen to have a bit of an odd cabin mate. Why are the two of you sharing this cabin? Well, that's up for you to decide, but whether you're close friends who decided to take a vacation together or random strangers stuck together by circumstances, you're here for awhile so you might as well take the time to relax and get to know one another up here in these mountains!]

SCENARIO THREE: MONSTER HOUSE
[It seems like you've just misplaced a few items at first- but after awhile, it becomes apparent that the items are misplacing themselves. Weird, right?
Maybe not that weird, because soon afterward, items of all shames and sizes start to move around, now well within sight. Their intent is clearly to annoy or even harm you, depending on how dangerous the item is... maybe a deathly pair of pants, to a set of keys that keeps running away from you, to a house consumed with the desire to- well, consume you.
Be careful of everything, be suspicious of items that may be trying to lure you in with their stillness, and have fun! This event is based on Hadriel's It's Aliiiive! event this month.]
no subject
I did love you, whether you still believe it or not.
[It was not so easy for most people, but love and hatred existed easily side-by-side within Ivar. He had love Freydis and part of him loved her still, even after all he had done to her.
He would not back down or apologize for what he'd done to their son. It had been one of the few non-malicious acts Ivar had ever done.]
I did what I had to. You have no idea what my life was like. I would never have wished that on a child of mine. It was mercy that I showed.
no subject
[Whatever she might have used to rise in the world and support him, it didn't alter that she believed in the Gods and what she knew to be true of them.]
Odin gave his eye so that he could see things truly. He was marked, different as you are, but if he were in front of you now, would you think that it is mercy to kill him? You achieved more than your brothers without your legs but you did not give Baldur the chance to prove the same.
[Her son. She had not even been able to hold him long before he was ripped away. It was painful, the sort of suffering she imagined Odin felt when he hung himself from Yggdrasil. That had been self inflicted, this was imposed on her.]
You wage war with your brothers and you wage war with the Gods.
no subject
[It had hurt him worse than anything give up a son he'd wanted so badly. He'd loved Baldur in his own way, but he wouldn't condemn him to a lifetime of misery and being show cruelty.]
Tyr lost his hand to Fenrir and the gods laughed rather than show compassion. Which do you think people would have done to our son?
[He limps forward and grabs the wrist holding the knife, grinding the bones under his strong grip until she drops it.]
And what have the gods told you, hmm? Did they give you foresight to see what would happened when you betrayed my trust and sided with my brothers?
[There's that same dangerous glint in his eye, the same one that had been there just before he strangled her to death.]
no subject
[She wanted to strike him, to throw the knife at him, but before she could move or react, he had his hand around her wrist. It didn't take long for the pain to overwhelm her and for the blade to drop.
He hit her before, strangled her twice, this was nothing new. He might overpower her, but she could at least bite back her screams and not give him that satisfaction. Her greatest asset had been her calm demeanor, now used to mask all she felt and thought.]
You left him to die because you were afraid others would talk more about what you are. You weren't sparing him, you were killing what you hate about yourself.
[She watched him steadily, still not afraid even after all of this time.]
I knew what would happen. [And she did it anyway.] You thought to kill me before that. I gave you the reason you wanted.
no subject
[He looks furious when Freydis accuses him of leaving Baldur to die purely because he was thinking about himself. He'll never make her understand that it was one of the few acts where he hadn't solely been selfish. He'd thought leaving his child to the mercy of the gods was better than a lifetime of scorn, derision, and pity that would have awaited him if he had lived.]
What I did to our son was out of love. But you'll never understand. Not if I explain for the rest of my life.
[He should kill her again. It doesn't matter that the gods of this place bring people back alive. His rage is great enough. But he can't bring himself to do it. Once already was hard enough. Instead he shoves her away from him, hard enough to knock her to the ground.]
no subject
[He was right. She never would understand. Fervent belief that his deformities made him stronger wouldn't be weakened under his anger or reasons. However Baldur was marked, he was still her son, carried in her belly and made strong by her hope.]
You can take life, but you don't understand what it is to carry it, to push it from your body. You don't know the love a mother has for a child, even if your mother loved you.
[She falls back against the ground, her wrists screaming as her weight lands against them. She stared up at him through her hair, still steady and cold.]
Is it the same love you gave Hvitserk? Bjorn? Sigurd?
no subject
[He'd never seen the one who would turn on his side as being Freydis. She was his blind spot and always had been. He smacks her with his crutch when she dares to bring up his brothers.]
They all betrayed my trust and left me. I thought you'd be different.
[There was something brittle and as easy to break as glass in his voice when he says that. It's still there when he turns away from her, still talking.]
I thought I could have what I finally wanted with you: a family.
[He could have left her body there on the floor. Instead, he'd wasted valuable minutes that could have been spent getting out of Kattegat to show how he truly felt. His voice goes quiet and there's very little of the fury that usually sustains him.]
I left your body and Baldur's bones arranged on our bed before I left. To show what I had really lost.
[Power and the crown were one thing, but those could always be gained back. It wasn't so easy to replace the family he'd yearned for.]
no subject
I gave you everything and you killed our child.
[How could she be loyal after that? How could any mother?
But she stays quiet as he continues and speaks of what happened after, how he arranged her body and placed her son at her side. Only in death had he reunited the mother and child. She wanted to be moved, to feel that same tenderness for him again.
Instead, there was a silent rage and a heart that was broken, but still loved him deeply.]
You gave me some mercy.
no subject
[He'd held her for a long time after he'd killed her, holding the only woman he'd ever loved. He had kept telling her that even as he strangled her, so that it would be the last thing she heard. Every time he thought his heart couldn't bear more pain, another bit of it shattered it into more pieces.]
Hate me forever then. It seems you've already decided to do that.
[Then he goes and sinks down into a chair. It's clear he's decided he's not going anywhere, even though the company within here is far more harsh than anything he'd face outdoors. He's been on his legs too long.]
no subject
But she knew her place and she knew how to survive. They were stuck here together, brought to this world to suffer. So long as they were trapped, she would need to think clearly and plan for herself.
Slowly, she moved to his side, carefully watching him as she sank by his side. He didn't have his usual braces, but she knew the pain he suffered. Wordlessly, she massaged at his legs, trying to help soothe the ache from his limbs, as she would have were things well between them.]
no subject
The ache never truly leaves, but the contact soothes his muscles just a little bit. To have her hands on him at all calms his mind.
He moves one hand, slowly so that she doesn't think he's going to hit her again. Then Ivar brushes it through her hair in a moment of tender affection, one he would show to almost no one else. He wishes he could stop loving her. Maybe then it wouldn't hurt so much.]
no subject
But there was only so long that she could keep away, and despite rage and hatred, love was still strong enough to compel her back to his side. They were locked together, not simply here but forever.
More than that, she needed him if she hoped to survive and a placated Ivar was easier to manage.
She nearly flinches under her touch, but only through sheer willpower does she remain still. She could let him pretend for as long as he wanted.]
no subject
His thumb, rough and coarse from a lifetime of using his hands to drag himself around, lightly skitters across her cheek. He'd wanted to be with her forever and thought the gods would allow them to be so. Instead, he wondered if Odin, Freyr, and the rest of them were laughing at all the misfortunes that had been heaped onto him as of late.]
no subject
Now, she feels as if she has to constantly be on her guard. To watch him and predict when his temper will flare. It's a dance on a razor's edge and she will inevitably cut herself. It wouldn't take much to slip, a moment where his affection becomes familiar and warm to her. So long as she kept her heart distant, she would not be caught in his usual traps.
She lifted her head and met his eyes, quiet and thoughtful. There was no smile on her face, but there was no air of hostility either.]
no subject
It seems like a truce, at least for the moment. If they can't stand each other, at least they're not in any danger of trying to pull off a murder-suicide drama either.
Abruptly, Ivar brings up another subject.]
Is there anything to eat in here?
no subject
The change of subject broke the uncomfortable silence, allowing her to pull away and move back to the kitchen. There were cans and bags, but they made little sense to her. Fresh was better.]
If you bring me meat, I can cook for us.
no subject
[It's one of the things that is just beyond what his body is capable of. Hunting requires strength, skill, and agility. He has plenty of the former two, but the third is the sticking point.
He gestures towards the bags.]
Have you tried opening any of those?
no subject
[More than her, at least. Once she knew how to care for herself in that way, she wouldn't need to rely so much on Ivar, needing to act so loving and gentle to him.
Perhaps she might be able to better protect herself against him? She was no shieldmaiden, but there needed to be some way to keep him from killing her again, even if it was only to seduce him?]
No. I do not trust anything given by those that brought us here.
no subject
[Freydis and Ivar were going to be providing a lot of that with their current mindsets. There was no doubt about it.]
no subject
And you? Do you wish me dead?
no subject
no subject
We can live freely.
[Specifically she could live freely]
no subject
[He's not sure she'll give him a truthful or direct answer. She can be infuriatingly vague sometimes.]
no subject
Are there any others from Kattegat?
no subject
Not from Kattegat. But King Alfred is here. I am living with him.
[That's just going to make things a whole lot more complicated. Between the way he feels about Alfred and Freydis, his emotions feel far too mixed up to even begin the process of untangling them.]
