(no subject)

( five + one )

how it works:
i. post a comment with the characters you play.
ii. go around and prompt other players with a 5 + 1 prompt (e.g. "Five times Hope said sorry and one time he didn't")
iii. write a fic for the prompts people leave you!
iv. enjoy your fic? we hope?

1.

"Cadet!" the instructor snaps, sounding annoyed. "Were my instructions unclear?"

They're standing in the practice hall. She's barefoot, her opponent down. This is the first time she's ever beaten someone into submission. It will probably be the last time she does it with her fists.

Her opponent is Cadet Hii'su. Rumors say she has weak bones. The instructors seem very sure that she has no spine to speak of.

"No, sir," Maketh says. She is fourteen years old. "This cadet understands your orders."

"Wonderful. I had reservations about your intelligence for a moment. But, for the sake of your fellow students, I shall repeat myself. When your opponent is down, cadets, you will give them no chance to rise back up." He glares, smoothing a hand down his uniform. "What is mercy, Cadet Tua?"

"Weakness," she answers, careful not to meet his eyes.

"Precisely. You will not shame the Empire with your indulgence of it." He claps his hands together. "Finish the drill, cadet."

Maketh thins her mouth and does as she's told.

2.

Hii'su is afraid of the medics.

"They can't take my blood," she tells Maketh in a whisper, holding a hand over her belly. The infection stinks though the makeshift bandages. She and Maketh both came from Lothal. It's a tedious alliance. "It's fine. I just need to fix it. They only hit me once, but if they look they'll know. I just need you to cover for me just once. Say I'm sick. They'll believe you."

Maketh is very good at listening. She hears things she's not supposed to.

The instructors say that it is a cadet's duty to inform their superiors of any treasonous activity. And cadets of the Imperial Academy are expected to be of pure, human blood. Anything less than that is grounds for immediate expulsion.

"Please, Maketh, please, I just need a little time..."

In the morning, they're told Cadet Hii'su suffered a training accident. Her sacrifice is a testament to her commitment to the Empire, the instructors say.

3.

"You cannot take him!" the man shouts, straining against the storm troopers holding him back. Their armor shines beetle-white in the desert sun. "He's just a child! He didn't mean anything!"

"He attacked an officer of the Imperial Army," Maketh tells him.

"He threw a stone!"

The rules are clear. The father never sees his child again.

4.

"It's very clear what must be done, Minister Tua. These civilians have failed to surrender their land to the Empire. This represents a threat to operational security and cuts our mission efficiency in half! Give us the order and we'll deal with them."

She gives the order. The village burns.

5.

It is a cadet's duty to inform their superiors about any suspect behavior in their ranks.

"Come with us," Itani murmurs, arms wrapped around Maketh's waist. "My brother stole a uniform. We'll go somewhere far away, where they'll never find us. I'll teach you how to fly, kitten."

Maketh closes her eyes.

In the morning, Itani and the others are gone.

She doesn't alert her commander.
