Well, for one thing, they say that they don't like being shaken. But I suppose it's the odd comments. They think we're ugly and stupid bipedal creatures, of no particular use or talent. And there are never enough flowers in the library, which is apparently our fault. They were quite unkind about my nose last time I spoke with them.

It has been a long time since the world has touched me. Venice in the 15th century is the last time I felt such awe.

There are so many different kinds, and they all have different ways, different lives. Some live alone, others live in vast colonies. There are some bees who live less than a week; they are created as warriors only, and guard the mouth of the hive against attackers.

Bees are beautiful, brightly colored and devoted. They dance. Their sounds are so happy. They make honey, of course. And without them, there would be no life at all.
