Test Drive Meme #8

Welcome to Hadriel's test drive, and thank you again for your interest in the game! As always, our reserves page is here, and our applications page is here! Reserves open April 24th, and apps are open May 1st.

Two quick points here as well:
1. Any thread made in Hadriel's test drive will be accepted as the sole Action Log sample in the application.
2. All threads made in the test drive can be considered game canon, either through handwaving or through a shared mental experience while coming through the Door!

Test drives will be broken up into specific god mini-events, during which your characters can see how well they fare under the watchful eye of one of the gods. Choose wisely or just simply pick 'em all, and have fun!

F E A R

SCENARIO ONE: DEAD FLESH BUFFET
[The Door brings in all that is chaotic and evil in the world. This may include you, may include the person next to you... and may include the monster behind you.

Watch out as you explore the streets of Hadriel, because you're not alone, and there's always something lurking in the shadows, waiting for the perfect chance to swarm around you and chow down. This time, the Door has brought in a group of rotfiends, from the video game The Witcher.

These unpleasant-looking creatures are necrophages, meaning they feed on the flesh of the dead, and if that flesh is in short supply they are happy to add to it. Normally found in groups, they are fast and difficult to corner. What's more, when on the verge of death, they have an annoying tendency to explode into a flammable cloud of poisonous toxins. You left your torch at home, right?]

R A G E
SCENARIO TWO: MMM WHATCHA SAY
[There you were, just walking along the street, minding your own business like a good underground hell-city citizen, when all of a sudden you saw someone. It was like love at first sight - if by 'love' you mean 'deep burning hatred'. You've never wanted to kill someone so much, and why? Well, you're not really sure, but there's probably a reason! You'll just have to figure it out. Or not. Who needs a reason for murder, anyway?

Or maybe you're the one someone else has targeted. Maybe you know they're after you and you're desperately trying to watch your back. Why do they hate you? You don't even know them. Or maybe you do, maybe they're your best friend. Either way, this is a super awkward situation, and someone might end up dead. Hopefully not you!

This is a mini version of our Assassin event this month!]

H O P E

SCENARIO THREE: SCRATCH OFF
[This morning, you received a scratch ticket in the mail (who knew Hadriel even had mail?), addressed to you. The instructions are clear enough - scratch off three matching icons, and you win a prize! Sure, okay. But here's the grand prize: a one-way ticket home.

Unfortunately, try as you might, you aren't gonna win that one, but keep hoping! And hey, just think of all the other GREAT PRIZES you could win: an inflatable duck, a plastic ring to give your sweetheart, an empty can of Red Bull, a cell phone charm shaped like a strange green creature with a boner.

So what if you didn't win that ticket home? You got something almost as good: a shitty prize! Thanks, Hope!]

Fear

[What kind of tacky bullshit is this.

Although not entirely threatening, Ruby still wants nothing to do with the rotfiends; she's not a fan of being injured, and although the monsters could only hurt her vessel that's still more than enough reason for her to want to avoid them. If she had a good weapon she might've just fought her way through, but at the moment she has nothing, because Dean has her knife, that--

Not the point right now. Right now, she needs to avoid the horror-movie rejects lurking around seemingly the largest cave in the world. There's a lot she doesn't get about this place, like how she's even here, but those will have to wait as she backs around a corner out of sight of an approaching pack of rotfeinds.

What are they so interested in? Is it another person? Or is there maybe someone who decided to hide in the same shadowy alley Ruby's chosen?]

Hope

[No, seriously, what's with the tacky bullshit.

Ruby is actually not too interested in the grand prize, but she does enjoy the consolation gifts. Especially the plastic rings, which she's collected two of; this is all incredibly stupid, but she's at least amusing herself for the moment by lining up her winnings on the bar as she enjoys her drink. It takes a ridiculous amount of alcohol to get a demon drunk but that doesn't mean she can't pretend otherwise, and her line of strange prizes might be doubling as a conversation pieces.

She needs to start collecting some information, and alcohol always helps with getting people to be a little more talkative than they might otherwise be.]
torrefied: (wake up; wake up dead man)

hope.

[personal profile] torrefied 2016-05-02 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[Mello seems to have the same idea about the bar - people plus alcohol equals looser tongues, which equals easier information. He doesn't drink much on principle, and he especially wouldn't in an unfamiliar place like this; that beer bottle in his hand is mostly for the sake of blending in, though with how he looks - head to toe black leather, rosary hung around his neck, mirrored sunglasses still firmly on his face despite the fact that he's indoors - there's really not much hope of him not standing out in the crowd, is there.

The rings set on the bar catch his interest, because they're an anomaly, and anomalies signify something different. He has a naturally curious mind, too, and so far he's only been observing the other people in the bar with a keen eye, but this seems like as good an opportunity as any to stop watching and start asking. It's a gamble, of course, but all good openings are.]

If those are what passes for sobriety chips around here, I'd say someone has an interesting sense of humor.

[She looks up from the middle of scratching off another card when Mello speaks, giving him a quick glance--interesting look, maybe a priest or an old-school vampire hunter?--and then a friendly smile.]

Not sobriety chips, but I think someone has an interesting sense of humor anyway since they're apparently lotto prizes.

[She slides him an unscratched ticket.]

Want to try your luck?
torrefied: (i will avenge and justify my reasons)

[personal profile] torrefied 2016-05-02 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[He's already had one encounter with the idiotic scratch tickets - not amusing in the slightest, in his opinion - but an ordinary person wouldn't refuse the offer, he estimates. He may as well.]

Sure. You can't win if you don't play, right?

[There's a hint of a smile curved across his mouth as he says this, though there's a hard edge to it, and the smile disappears completely, merging into a pinched scowl by the time he finishes revealing his prize - a single solid white jigsaw puzzle piece.]

Well, this is pretty useless.

[Mello does his best to sound casual about it, but underneath that mask, he's seething with irritation.]

[personal profile] corundum 2016-05-02 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[She watches with a small smile on her face, the expression carefully amused but not unkind; she takes note of his scowl, and that he's clearly not finding this whole thing very fun.]

Hey, maybe if we collect enough of them we can complete the picture. Think it's a white dog in a snowstorm or something?

[She doesn't for a moment think the jigsaw puzzle is actually part of a picture, even an entirely blank one.]

So what's your name?
torrefied: (soulless and bent on destruction)

[personal profile] torrefied 2016-05-03 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Hard to tell from just one piece.

[He would be shocked if it belonged to anything except one of Near's blank puzzles. But there's no sense in talking about that here - Near is another world away, and if the reminder is someone's idea of a joke, Mello has no intention of letting on that he doesn't find it funny - any more than he's already let slip, at least. He tucks the puzzle piece into the inside pocket of his jacket and returns his attention to her.]

Mello. And you?

Ruby. Want a drink? Seems there's a little of whatever here.

[She stands up on the rungs of her barstool without waiting for an answer, too short to reach anything over the counter without really leaning for it, but she does manage to close her fingers around a bottle of rum and sit back down in triumph. Even if he doesn't want it, she'll drink it.]
torrefied: (all your theories turn to dust)

[personal profile] torrefied 2016-05-03 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Sure.

[He doesn't, really, but who goes to a bar if they're not going to drink? He can pretend, the same way he's been pretending with the bottle of beer since he got here.]

Say, you wouldn't happen to be running this place, would you?

[She grabs a nearby glass and pours some of the rum for him, as well as filling up her own glass.]

Nope. Just found myself in this crazy cave-city today.

[And decided to help herself at the bar, because she deserves it.]
torrefied: (soulless and bent on destruction)

[personal profile] torrefied 2016-05-05 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I see ... well, you seemed to know your way around the bar here. I just wondered if maybe you owned the place.

[That's interesting, that she's only just arrived. Mello makes a note of that, because he too just found himself here. Two isn't quite enough to make a pattern, but it's a good place to start.]

Where were you before?

I just find it easy to make myself at home.

[An understatement, accompanied with a small smile that isn't a smirk but isn't quite the sweet-friendly she's been playing at either.

But she allows it to fade entirely at his question, deciding between a semi-truthful answer to gain sympathy or a guarded, purposefully vague one.]

In a church.

[True, but not extremely so, and she decides to down her shot after her words to add the obvious hint that there's more to the story.]

How about you?
torrefied: (wake up; wake up dead man)

[personal profile] torrefied 2016-05-08 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
[One gloved hand closes around the rosary hung around his neck. In a church is where Mello planned to be this time tomorrow, waiting for death to find him. There's no possible way she could know this - he hadn't even told Matt what his final plan had been - but even as a coincidence, it cuts a little too closely for Mello's taste, a faint frown working its way into his expression.]

Japan. On business.

[More to the story there, too, clearly.]

That's on hold now, obviously.

[He's not bitter about it. Really.]

( of all the things that he's seen come through the door since his arrival, he's almost positive these are the most disgusting things he's ever seen – and even back home, he's seen some shit. but this is par for the course, because nothing has changed and as long as he's stuck in the cave city, nothing will.

but that's neither here nor there. he's managed to avoid the bulk of them so far, still opting to keep what bullets he has left for an in-case-of-emergency scenario, and even though the rotfiends seem to be particularly interested in trying to get at him, he's never been anything if not inexplicably able to avoid a sticky situation by narrowly escaping by the skin of his teeth, and it's just the alley that ruby has seen fit to duck down that he inadvertently chooses for himself, though he won't know it until he quite literally almost trips right over her.

the shadows don't lend to vision already darkened around the edges, and as he's turning around to make sure he isn't being followed the bulk of his weight knocks squarely against her – and he reaches out reflexively to make sure she doesn't topple over, because good job, sam, all you need going on in your life right now is the fact that you've just made some poor soul's day even worse when it probably hadn't been going as planned in the first place.
)

Ah – damn, I'm sorry, I didn't – ( wait a second.

he knows that face.

as if a switch had been flipped, his expression melts from apologetic to downright befuddled, something simultaneously bewildered and bereft, something that shifts into a little more incredulity and the slow realization that this really, really can't be happening.
)

Ruby!?

[Ruby isn't expecting someone to run into her like an idiot--it's obviously someone, not one of those zombie things--and she only refrains from laying into them for their stupidity because she's in a new place and maybe this person could be useful.

And then she realizes it's Sam, and oh she regrets not saying anything.

Only now she's faced with trying to figure out exactly what to say, because this is not a situation that should ever occur. She remembers, very clearly, Dean stabbing her; she should be dead, but she's here. And so is Sam, and her game is up.

The look on his face prompts a smirk on hers, and in a moment she's made up her mind.]

Aw, Sam. Meeting in an alley, just like the old days. Romantic as always.

[She has no reason to play nice, and he ruined everything. He's lucky she isn't ripping his heart out of his chest, though she is ready for him to make any sort of aggressive move toward her and therefore give her a reason to go ahead and do so.]

( about making someone's day even worse.

who'd have known it was going to be his?

things aren't exactly easy in hadriel on the best of days – and, well, coming face-to-face with a problem, a habit that he'd thought had been left in the past is not something that he'd been expecting, even for as often as things tend to throw him for a loop here.

and for as much as she's trying to think of something to say, he's in much the same boat, what with his tongue sticking to the roof of his mouth in a way that makes coherent speech all but impossible. there are a handful of thoughts zooming through his mind, all of which border on the vein of how are you here? even when he has to admit that it isn't the least plausible thing that could happen – but there aren't words for his surprise, there aren't words for much of anything

until she opens her mouth. and if not for his addled mind trying to make sense of it all, he would have been seeing red.
)

Wh– you're dead. You're supposed to be dead. We watched you die. ( a beat, and he takes a breath, lets it out in a solid whoosh. )

How are you here?

[He's so flustered. It almost puts her in a good mood, if she weren't talking to Sam Winchester after he and his self-righteous jerk of a brother hadn't just stabbed her.]

What, after everything you've seen, me being alive is really that shocking to you?

[She has no idea what's going on, but she's not about to say it. Might as well let him think this is all perfectly expected and planned for.]

I should be asking you what you're doing here, but I guess it's just the same answer as always.

[That answer being 'getting into trouble' or 'nosing around where he doesn't belong', whichever he likes best.]

( well of course he's going to be flustered, because never in a million years would he have expected to see her again, even with the concept of death not being entirely permanent. ( at least, where he and dean are concerned; everyone else that really matters, they've been long gone and stayed gone. )

he'll find the words he's looking for in a minute, maybe, because he really can't stand there with his mouth working like that of a fish out of water – get it together, sam – and he ends up frowning at her so severely that it's a wonder his face doesn't stick like that, the hardness of his gaze like that of stone.
)

Considering I'm the one that gave Dean the opening to do the job? Just color me a little surprised. ( that's putting it mildly. just a bit.

he exhales slowly through his nose, trying both to keep his calm and muster up the words in answer to the question she hasn't even asked. he doesn't have to tell her anything, not really – she hasn't earned it – but at the same time, she has to be wondering about what had landed her here in the first place.

this is probably the first instance that he's really seen that the door brings in evil and chaos.
)

Go ahead, ask. ( like it's going to be any answer other than the one she's already expecting. ) I didn't plan on coming here, if that's what you're thinking.
corundum: (ɴᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴄᴀɴ'ᴛ?)

Oh, please. You did so much work, like screwing up everything at the last moment doesn't come naturally to you.

[It's cavalier, flippant and unimpressed, but the fire in her eyes makes it clear it's no laughing matter to her. Dean's smug face was definitely not her favorite choice of last sights.

But then again, maybe it wasn't her last sight. She's here, after all, isn't she?

She does want to ask, but now that Sam's told her to go ahead she's tempted to just figure it out on her own or by sidling up to some other unsuspecting idiot here who'd surely love to help out a pretty damsel in distress. But instead she sighs, rolling her eyes and learning around Sam to make sure no rotfeinds are coming their way. It's more a show of calm and confidence--a lack of fear of Sam--than an actual check of their surroundings, however, and she soon turns her attention back to giving Sam an unimpressed look.]

How shocking. You ended up somewhere you didn't plan to be.

[That jab out of the way--]

But fine. This isn't Hell, obviously, and I'm guessing neither of us made it to Heaven, so sure. Enlighten me.
