Maketh Tua | Star Wars: Rebels

    [personal profile] mismanagement 2016-02-13 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Soooo many headcanons. Ask me anything.

•Maketh is an only child. And despite all her posturing, she grew up as a poor farm kid on Lothal. She got shipped to an off-world Imperial academy when she was thirteen. Since cadets only get to contact their parents once a month for monitored calls and Maketh never had the credits to visit over the summer, she quickly lost touch with them. They died before her graduation. She has fond but vague memories of them, and didn’t mourn them so much as forgot they existed.

•Lothal is a really shitty planet to farm on and relied heavily on imported goods to survive. Unfortunately the supply lanes were often disrupted or cut off entirely during the Clone Wars, which meant that food shortages were common. The problem was not fixed immediately after the war ended and there was a huge black market for basic goods that the Empire silently encouraged in order to make the people as desperate as possible. Maketh remembers the food shortages and ensuring chaos very well, and considers the Empire a benevolent force that brought structure to an uncivilized place, rather than exasperating the problem and then swooping in when there was no one left to lead an organized resistance.

•She’s desperately thankful for her education, as it’s really the only thing that got her away from the same life that her parents suffered through. And since she went to the Academy on an Imperial scholarship, she’s especially indebted to the Empire itself. Something her instructors never let her forget.

•She copies the accent of her mentor/boss, Governor Pryce, to make people think she grew up on one of the inner planets.

•Huge control freak. No one is allowed to make her coffee or touch her uniform. She irons it herself.

•Probably one of the only people ever who had a genuinely positive experience at the Imperial Academy, where cadets are canonically encouraged to murder each other and make it look like an accident in order to prove their ruthlessness.

•Maketh lacks the pure ruthlessness required of military officers, hence the reason she was slated to a civilian tract instead of entering the Imperial Military.
•However if she were technically a member of the military, she’d probably be a lieutenant colonel.

•The line between civilian and military in the Empire is extremely blurry. To someone who doesn't understand the system, she definitely comes off as military. Mostly because her people skills are lacking.

•It’s sheer dumb luck that she survived the Academy at all, since she was not well liked by her classmates. Though Maketh isn’t consciously aware of this, several of her instructors were very fond of her and banded together to make sure that she survived a few of the more blatant traps that were set for her. Even so, a classmate did attempt to kill her in a live-fire drill her third year. To this day, Maketh has convinced herself it was an accident.

•Though she’s ordered people shot, she’s never actually killed anyone herself. However, she’s been conditioned not to think about it very hard and wouldn’t hesitate if the situation called for it. She’d get hit by it very hard later on, though.

•That being said, Maketh has been shot several times herself. As a minister, she’s not allowed to carry weapons or wear body armor. This is no way prevents people from taking pot-shots at her.

•Despite what people think, Maketh actually did have a life outside her job. She enjoyed going to local performances and hanging out playing holo-chess with some of the more educated citizens.

•She took the executions of the two soldiers under her command very hard and is starting to overcompensate by becoming extremely protective of people she’s only recently met.

•She identifies as gay, but hasn’t had a relationship in over ten years and really wouldn’t know how to go about one.

What are her creature comforts? Her pet peeves?

Does she hold any regrets? If so, how does she deal with them?

If she could have three things from her universe in Hadriel, what would they be?

Her creature comforts tend to be routines rather than physical objects. The process of getting her coffee ready in the morning, feeding the stray cat outside her apartment in the evening. She did have some light catchers hanging in her apartment that she liked just for the aesthetics, even though she considered them frivolous. Pet peeves are when people disagree with ideas that Maketh considers logical, or when they do things against what she sees as their best interest. Also people touching her stuff, even if it's in an attempt to be helpful. This is the reason why no one can bring her coffee or help with her uniform. They do it wrong.

Regrets? Ahahahahhaha. Oh so many. There's the fact that she essentially dedicated her life to helping a totalitarian dictatorship take over the galaxy, that all her efforts to improve things for civilians on Lothal just made everything worse, and that the actions she took - right or wrong - led to events that got her subordinates killed, and caused several of her trusted allies to turn on her. And, though this is buried pretty deep, there's the fact that she's essentially turned into the very thing that killed her parents. So how does one deal with this? Well, Maketh is throwing herself into work. Essentially the reason she's preparing for war against the gods (why, maketh, why) is so she doesn't have to think about the past. She fully expects to be killed in the attempt. Obviously this isn't healthy, and it's not going to work as a coping mechanism for much longer. It'll be interesting to see where it ends up.

If she could have three things from her world, she'd take a pair of non-melted boots (custom fitted!), her personal datapad since it has her entire collection of books - nearly a library on its own, she collects them, and a military grade shield generator, which could be used to protect the majority of Hadriel. She's extremely distressed that the technology doesn't exist here. And if she could take people, she'd take Aresko and Grint, who were two soldiers under her command who got beheaded for screwing up. Maketh wasn't especially friendly with them - didn't really like them, actually - but she feels responsible for their deaths, and they're important to her now since they prompted the overhall of basically ever aspect of her life.

'she's essentially turned into the very thing that killed her parents.
Oh god, that's so horribly sad ;_; I have such a weakness for flawed characters who are decent at heart but have made some really questionable decisions and struggle with the consequences/are at odds with themselves.

I look forward to seeing how she copes with the shit Hadriel throws at her, given how much routine and order means to her! Do you think she'll learn to bend before she breaks, or will it be more (another?) a case of shatter and reforge?

Me too. Especially when there's the question of whether or not their actions - however well intentioned now - can ever make up for the horrible shit they allowed to happen.

Funny you should ask that. I have plans for after the wendigo event. Short answer: yeah, no, she's gonna snap under the pressure. She'll mostly handle the wendigo thing, but after getting killed or cured, she'll have enough time to sit back and let everything hit here. Which will not be pretty. Maketh's coping mechanisms are not good.

Also, any plans for Henry during the wendigo event?

Well hey, Henry's got a bottle of whiskey...?

And no, not yet! Originally I was going to sit it out because a friend was meant to be visiting for a week, but she feel ill and we've had to cancel our plans. So now I actually have the time to get involved! He won't be going wendigo, but that's all I've settled on. :)

It'll be used, let me assure you.

Hmm. You know, I have an idea you might be interested in. I'm going out right now, but I'll leave a comment in your drop box when I get back, and you can see if that's something you'd like to do.

Also, anything else you'd like them to do in the thread? It seems like it's winding down.

    Okay!

And nah, I'm happy to end it there! You can assume that he shoots any jabberjays that get annoying on the route there. No hesitation or comment at all.
